PROM QUEEN IN A MILK BUCKET

Carolyn Trunnell comes of age in a Mormon family in the 1950’s and ‘60’s.  Her parents attract a following of admirers for their ability to produce hordes of children—seventeen in all—putting them on stage to sing and tap dance.  She is devoted to her fun, hard-working bricklayer father.  Her family is poor, the house is filthy, but life is happy…except for the father’s occasional fits of rage.  When he’s happy he drags the family from town to town for quirky moneymaking ventures, to escape bill collectors, or whenever the grass looks greener.  Other times he beats the children.  In public, her mother, an accomplished singer and concert violinist, lives to show off her talents and her large family.  Unable to manage the household, she conceals their home life from the public.

The family lives without running water or clean clothes.  The children keep each other from freezing at night in rundown hovels sleeping spoon-style in crowded beds.  Their father makes even the most difficult situations seem like a circus.  As they careen through life, the bond between family members tightens as they pull together to keep up the family image, and help each other survive hardship.

Carolyn  finds ways, under near-impossible circumstances, to look like "Other People"--even if it means scrubbing up in a milk bucket.  She sews her own clothes and studies hard to rise to the top of her class.

Will Carolyn continue to ride the "crazy train" led by her charismatic father to celebrity nirvana, or will she jump off before it crashes?  Read my sometimes entertaining, albeit gut-wrenching account of growing up a daughter of Heber Trunnell.

Comments: Can't wait to read your story! Have enjoyed what you have shared so far. It seems that there are many who have 'toxic' upbringings but those are the stories that are the most interesting, sorry to say. And we seem to spend the rest of our lives trying to overcome our 'upbring'!!!

Comments: Carolyn, I'll be eager to read your book. My mother has schizophrenia while my brother and I were growing up in Richland. I graduated in l962. I never had felt like I wanted to write about my experiences of living a lie, at times, but I am glad that things are now more in the open and discussed more then they were back then. I will look forward to reading your book.

Comments: Care,
Oh, it has been so long ago that we were friends. I read your work and it brings back memories, but also many surprises. I was so blinded by my personal feelings that I sure missed the whole picture. It does reveal a lot in retrospect.

You are an amazing woman, and a great writer. I hope someday to have the time to devote to writing. It is something that I keep promising myself that I will do, but life keeps getting in the way. For the past year and a half we have had our youngest daughter and her five children living with us. I have to play the role of father and Grandpa. In addition I am afflicted with full-time employment. Most of my life I have been self employed and enjoyed a bit of freedom in my schedule, but I finally have come down to earth and the reality that I need a job with benefits.

Oh, the rambling that I do late at night.

I will always have a tender spot in my heart for you and your family. I look forward to reading your book(s) ;-)

Good night... er, good morning.
